5 Dysfunctional of Team Review

On day 1 of my new job as Engineering Manager, my boss recommended this book 5 Dysfunctional of Team. It is an easy book to read. Was meant to be a self-improve theme book, yet, the way it was present was more like a storybook.

5DoT places a lot of emphasis on teamwork. Team that forms by having a lot of mutual understanding and trust. Which is about half of the book is talking about this. The rest of the 4 DoT is a subset of what can be built after establishing the trust. For that, I’ll probably just dive deeper toward a discussion on Trust.

A superficial trust can be built upon the expertise of one individual. Is that the trust we’re talking about?

If one is very good at doing sales. Yes, it makes sense to trust for him (not being bias, bare with me) to be in charge of it. Yet, because of their expertise, one might also fear to question the way they work. Which is ultimately didn’t fulfill the 2nd DoT, Fear of Conflict.

Thus, I would like to share one lesson from this. Is dare to question things even though you might be wrong. Good culture and share value within the organization is the trust by itself. We do not punish but encourage people to question and bring up the issue.
